BenQ Materials 2023 ESG Supplier Conference: A Commitment to Sustainable Partnerships

Global climate change is not only causing surface and ocean temperatures to rise and Arctic ice shrinkage to accelerate, it is also causing ecological damage and affecting the survival of species. Scientists have warned that the Arctic Sea could be ice-free for the first time by the 2030s, while ocean acidification due to excessive absorption of carbon will worsen.

To mitigate the negative effects of extreme climate conditions, governments have set net zero carbon emissions as a common goal by 2050. BenQ Materials is committed to doing its part. The company has set goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 (vs. base year 2020) and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. It is actively working with its supply chain to guide small- and medium-sized suppliers to implement carbon-reduction policies and ESG best practices.

On June 8th, BenQ Materials held its third ESG Supplier Conference, bringing together over 100 suppliers, including not only those from the Functional Film Business Group but also from the medical and performance textile groups.

The one-day event was themed "Net Zero, Innovation, Common Good" and featured the mutual sharing of ESG initiatives. The event fostered creative ideas on how to achieve the participants' joint pledge of net zero emissions by 2050.

Speaking at the conference, BenQ Materials’ Chairman ZC Chen reiterated the importance of an ESG framework, stating that "it comes with challenging issues that all companies must resolve and implement". Echoing this commitment to work with the supply chain to achieve sustainability, BenQ Materials President Ray Liu noted that "carbon neutrality is of prime importance for companies to be engaged in to realize their true value to society."

Several partners, including AUO, Fujifilm, Mitsubishi Chemical, and Chung Hwa Pulp Corp., were featured at the event. They shared their experiences with reducing emissions through various carbon management programs, green product development, materials recycling, and corporate transformation.

The conference was a success in terms of exchanging in-depth information on international and industrial ESG trends and concluded with the consensus best captured in one-word takeaways such as "sustainability," "carbon reduction" and "common good." Compared with previous exploratory discussions, this year, most companies have set clear carbon reduction targets and implementation guidelines, reflecting ESG’s indispensable key role in business transformation.

BenQ Materials remains committed to leading the way to improve a green supply chain, linking upstream and downstream partners to accelerate ESG development and create a more sustainable future for all.
