Earth Month 2022 — Low-Carbon Living Together!

Earth Day is a global annual event held on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and Denis Hayes, a young activist, the event was a protest against environmental deterioration caused by industrial development, including oil spills, toxic dumps, and the loss of wilderness and wildlife extinction, among others.

In 1990, the environmental movement went global and mobilized 200 million people in 141 countries, lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. Today, Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world. And EARTHDAY.ORG hosts a different theme every year to call for climate action. The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest in Our Planet”, which calls for everyone — businesses, governments, and citizens — to act individually and to build a prosperous and sustainable future together.

This year, BenQ Materials designated April to be “Low-Carbon Living Month”. Employees are invited to practice low-carbon living in conjunction with another international campaign, Earth Hour. Simple energy- and electricity-saving tips, such as reducing the number of elevator rides, using reusable water bottles and utensils, and turning off computers at the end of the day, help to raise employee awareness of climate change and the need to reduce carbon emissions.

When it comes to a low-carbon footprint lifestyle, most people might think that small changes in their lives have no impact on the environment. Much of this is due to not knowing how much carbon emissions they produce in their daily activities. Therefore, this month we’re also sharing carbon-reduction knowledge with colleagues. These include, for example, the carbon emissions from riding an elevator up and down one floor being equivalent to the carbon emissions of driving for one kilometer, producing one kilogram of beef produces 36.4 kilograms of carbon dioxide, and other similar carbon-emissions stats that help inform how the choices we make impact the planet. We hope that greater awareness promotes more consideration of other activities we can all practically do to make our lives more friendly to the environment

We also organized two cleanups to encourage our employees to lend a hand at waste removal. Mountain cleanups offer an opportunity for colleagues to experience hiking the great outdoors while reducing waste and plastic pollution to improve habitats. Another cleanup has been organized on Earth Day to remove trash in the community surrounding BenQ Materials’ Taoyuan plant. This not only enhances our interaction with neighbors but also the environment we live in every day.

All stakeholders in our planet, whether it be businesses, governments, or citizens, have the simple yet effective power to affect our ecosystem. What each of us does and how we do it can have significant ripple effects. A low-carbon life brings about a transformation that changes the way we treat the Earth through conscious choices, and how we can incorporate more energy-saving and waste-reducing habits in our daily lives. Let's Invest In Our Planet for our collective future!
