Environmental Management Guidelines Revealed

Global warming, environmental awareness and green consumption are increasingly priorities of the general public and in light of this trend, corporate social responsibility is becoming more and more important.

In order to fulfill its CSR commitments, BenQ Materials has improved its green design, green production and green living and takes these ideals as guidelines for environmental management. The goal is to cultivate environmental awareness and combine business philosophy and environmental protection to create a sustainable operation.

The Environmental Management System

 

To demonstrate its commitment to environmental protection, BenQ Materials established the Environmental Management System in 2005 according to the ISO 14001 standard and implemented a system based on the PDCA philosophy (Plan, Do, Check and Act). Implementation and active operations have also been combined with reviews and corrective measures in order to lessen the impact on the environment.

 

Greenhouse Gas Management

When energy savings and carbon reduction became an important global issue, BenQ Materials participated in a GHG Reduction Project of the Low Carbon Industry Application Integration Counseling promoted by the Industrial Development Bureau. During that period, BenQ Materials successfully acquired the ISO 14064-1 Verification Statement and announced its GHG emissions data on the corporate intranet.

BenQ Materials’ carbon emission was reduced 25% in 2012 due to the promotion of energy savings and carbon reduction. Aiming for a 40% reduction in 2013, BenQ Materials endeavors to further reduce GHG emissions to mitigate the trend of global warming. 
 

Energy management

BenQ Materials’ GHG emissions mainly come from the use of energy. The major energy consumption is electricity, followed by natural gas. For electrical power savings, we employed a power supply quality monitoring system, spontaneous monitoring with infrared detectors and upgraded the electrical power. This resulted in a 29% reduction of power consumption per unit production.

In order to reduce the use of natural gas, BenQ Materials further makes use of the thermal energy generated by air-pollution treatment plants (heat accumulated combustion furnaces) and uses newly installed waste-heat recycle boilers in place of natural gas boilers. This has saved a total of 634,729 degrees of natural gas that is equivalent to a reduction of 1,333 tons of CO2 emission (3.47 times the amount absorbed by Da-An Forest Park). 
 

Waste recycle management

BenQ Materials aims to reduce total waste and to recycle resources through improved process technologies, reduced use of raw materials and recycling and re-use applications. Total recycled waste in 2012 has reached 95% of the total weight.

Regarding refuse treatment, qualified waste collection and treatment contractors, as well as optimal treatment methods are selected. BenQ Materials also implements irregular on-vehicle surveillance of waste treatment contractors to monitor waste routing.
 

Water Resource Management

Starting with the goal of sustained use of water resources, BenQ Materials implemented a water saving programs for the three major water consumption areas: Process water, the cooling tower and boiler water. Together these constitute around 80% of the total water consumption.

For the process water, showering, on-line circulation and recycling, process improvement by concentration adjustment and reduced down trough are used to reduce pure water consumption. In the cooling towers, recycled condensate and RO rejection water are used. Balancing pipes are provided to eliminate overflow; variable-frequency control devices are added to reduce carrier conveyance for reduced vaporization and dissipation losses.

Recycle of condensate water and additional circulation are employed in boilers to reduce the use of water. Through these measures, water consumption has been reduced by 70% comparing with 2008. 
 

Pollution Prevention

For pollution control monitoring, BenQ Materials assigns full-time personnel to take care of the operation and maintenance of respective pollution prevention devices. With their operation status incorporated into the central control system, 24-7 monitoring is carried out by dedicated personnel. BenQ Materials also established an air-quality patrolling mechanism for both the plant area and the vicinity. Measuring instruments have been purchased to monitor the environment and the Company expects to reach its goal of Zero-Pollution.

For the internal wastewater treatment within the plant, BenQ Materials established surveillance ponds to monitor the quality of the effluent water. For business waste management, BenQ Materials audits contractor qualifications annually and implements non-alerted, on-vehicle audits to ensure proper handling of wastes that exit the plant.
